You may not like hearing this but all the motivation you need comes from you doing what you need to lose weight. Here’s a statistic that might scare you a bit: 60% of Americans are either overweight or obese and for people who do lose weight, less than 10% keep it off.  Those are some of the scary stats we hear almost everyday from the media.  It kind of seems like they really want you to think you don’t have a chance at reaching your success goals. I want to give you a few weight loss motivation tips that will help get you started along the way to achieving your goals.

When you are faced with that kind of negativity, you just need to make a conscience decision not to listen or, at the very least, don’t internalize it.  Use whatever means necessary to avoid listening to this negative mental conditioning.  You don’t need anyone tearing you down. Instead, convince yourself daily that you are a wonderfully created and your body is designed to function optimally when it’s in shape.

There are a couple motivational quotes I really like and that have stuck with me for years, well they weren’t intended to be weight loss motivation quotes but they apply to all aspects of life not  just weight loss. Henry Ford said, “whether you think you can or can’t either way you’re right.” That’s a pretty powerful statement and one you should repeat in you mind as you’re trying to push out one more rep, or one more minute on the elliptical..  You ultimately are the one you need to believe, not what the media says or even your friends and family members. Sometimes friends and family can be the worst, always trying to make sure you don’t become any “better” than they are or become a threat to them in some way.  For example, at one time I lost a lot of weight and I had a sister tell me “I hope you gain it all back!” Well, gee thanks sis. I hope you fail at anything you try as well.

Another good quote comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson and can be used directly as motivation for weight loss, “Do the thing and you will have the power.” Sounds to me like you have the power, you just need to do the thing.  Maybe “the thing” is getting serious about your diet or committing to a workout. Whatever “the thing” is, just do it.  I have had spells when I didn’t feel like working out and honestly sometimes I succumb to that lack of motivation, but the times I did force myself to workout, I felt great that I conquered the mental battle.  Every time you beat that little voice you pull a little power from it, eventually leading to a small and weak voice in your head that won’t stop you.

I had a friend in high school who was a little on the chubby side. 15 years later I saw her and she was ripped. I couldn’t believe it. Since then I’ve always kept those two images in my head, reminding me that, if she can do it, I can do it. That’s one of the best weight loss tips I’ve ever been given (or shown). Sometimes that’s the only thing I need to get my butt into gear. It wasn’t my health or even looking good that gave me the motivation, but seeing someone I knew who conquered this battle. I just kept telling myself that what one person can do I can do.  Because in all reality people are people and she is no better than me and I’m no better that you. Once you believe in yourself you won’t have any problem tackling the issues of weight loss and life.
